Conflow Power Group, the first alternative power company with a total solution for smart cities, is in final tests in California, with ground breaking technology to reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
The solution is an aggregated power-based technology, installed first inside an autonomous street light (iLamp) and secondly in an also fully autonomous traffic signal (iTraffic Signal).
After a year of technical discussions and significant testing, both will be installed at California State University Dominguez Hills (CSUDH), as part of a four-party agreement between Conflow Power Group (CPG) Southern California Edison (SCE) California State Department for Transportation (Caltrans) and CSUDH.
CPG’s proprietary technology features advanced batteries, enhanced solar and unique generators, which combine inside one unit that powers itself. The units are sustainable, reduce emissions and increase reliance on alternative power. This ensures a continuous flow of power to a city’s streets for lighting and traffic signals as well as camera security, enhanced sensors, early fire detection systems and more. The system is fully off grid, but also has an on-grid backup system as part of the CPG strategy to demonstrate that alternative power can be fully reliable; thus, combatting the label alternative power receives in the market. Excess energy generated can even be added to the grid. CPG’s inclusive strategy, combined with multiple technologies, have ability to solve the growing global energy problem. Scaled manufacturing is secured, with the ability to produce 4000 units per month in Taiwan and Europe.
With expensive power failures costing U.S businesses around 150 Billion a year, it is vital that as many technologies as is possible run to the aid of the traditional electricity grid. CPG’s work is of particular importance to SCE, one of the nation’s largest electric utility holding companies, delivering electricity to 15 million people across Southern, Central and Coastal California. SCE has over 800,000 street lights in its portfolio and a mandate to reduce reliance on fossil fuel.
Meanwhile, Caltrans is the largest department of transport in the USA with 11 districts and over 1000 intersections and 50,000 miles of highways under its direct control. Both SCE and Caltrans need a cutting-edge partner like CPG to integrate new technologies state-wide, to help stop power outages, maintain safe streets and lower emissions. CPG’s technology therefore, is a valued contribution towards fulfilling these requirements; they are striking a balance between emission reduction and energy security with a real common-sense-based strategy, ensuring California is ahead of the field for reliance on alternative power.
According to the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC), the leading cause of electric transmission outages in California is faulty equipment or human error. CPG’s units will also reduce these two factors. The equipment will require less maintenance and use far less power to achieve the same result.
With the recent rolling brown and blackouts of 2022, forest fires, and further unprecedented heatwaves predicted in California, it is imperative the testing protocols for CPG’s units are strict. Monitoring is expected to be prolonged during a series of stress analysis to ensure the technology is robust and can handle the harsh environment and the volume of continuous power needs that California demands.
CPG is confident that the units installed will meet the requirements and the testing will be conclusive. Projections indicate that 60% of the world’s population will live in cities by 2050 and, according to the International Energy Agency, the overall demand for lighting will be 80% higher by 2030. The global potential for the iLamp is clear. CPG submits that localization of power generation and consumption is the future of our distributed power needs. It will bring a safer, brighter and cleaner future that is reliable and sustainable. The resulting data from this agreement will demonstrate massive savings for municipalities as well as increased security, connectivity and reliance.
Five separate tests spaced apart by approximately 30 days, will demonstrate key elements that will bring the alternative energy to a standard of reliance as a sustainable power solution. The first test will show autonomy for a simple street light using the CPG elevated and unique technologies. The second test will show the unit working without the solar function, demonstrating that not only does the CPG solution not require a reliance on the grid, but it also does not rely on one single component such as solar to light the streets. The third test will add equipment to run a micro grid for power storage and sharing.The fourth test will add the iTraffic Signal to the system which will demonstrate both day and night time power attainability. The final test will add a unique solar light head that will generate a surplus of power which can then be supplied to the grid. A detailed set of independent results will be available in early 2023.
Demonstrating efficiency in abundance, CPG’s technology is not just a street light, but a communications device which houses WIFI and Cellular. It also features a security station housing 360-degree cameras, a sensor hub for identifying smoke, and even weather and gunshot detection.
CPG’s iLamp and iTraffic Signal are ready for scaling via their manufacturing facility in Taiwan. However, some of the technology employed in these tests are not scaled for mass production yet and will need cost reductionsto make them commercially viable. Lack of conventional funding in the alternative energy sector slowed down many companies’ route to market.
Accordingly, CPG offered small license holders participation in the growth and revenue of CPG, in exchange for their promotion of the company and its products. They share revenue which is structured as a royalty. These grew into territorial license sales for 14 locations and a more are in various stages of negotiation. CPG paid a royalty in 2020 which resulted in a five-fold return to its license holders and its next royalty is due imminently. With the technology’s ability to change the landscape of cities across the world, Conflow Power will be shortly announcing a number of similar agreements in other states and licensed territories, as it heads into the next phase of commercialization.
